The Australian PhotoJournalist (APJ) is an annual journal that seeks to challenge a prevailing orthodoxy which has become our industry. The editorial board compromises emerging journalists from the undergraduate and postgraduate programs at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University.
The publication showcases the works of significant journalists (photo and text), writers, and academics, who seek to confront the tired notions inherent in our medium and applaud our successes. In 1994, the first issue of the journal was published and each successive edition has seen an improvement in content, design and print quality culminating with our latest edition 'Picturing Human Rights'. This 272 page full-colour book was compiled in response to the 60th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. The editorial board sought to evaluate the success of this declaration for all human beings regardless of race, religion, gender, age and ethnicity, and to expose the stories of those who have fallen through the cracks of this most noble vision.
The APJ is about making a difference. Our mission is to produce a magazine that is not only a testament to the unquestionable calibre of our discipline, but also casts a critical eye on global journalism and mass media practices. We are a non-profit publication and each edition is put together by a volunteer editorial board and our contributors donate their work so that these stories are told. All proceeds go straight back into covering the cost of producing the next edition.
